Workforce Development Center Opens on Heartland Campus
The Workforce Development Center officially opened its doors August 1, 2007, completing a 15-year effort to bring all of Heartland Community College’s classrooms on to one campus.

The 22 million dollar facility is the new home of Workforce Services, Corporate and Community Education and the institution’s Technology Division.

The majority of the building’s 100,000 square feet is occupied by instructional facilities for the Technology Division, which has been located at the Towanda Plaza campus since Heartland’s main campus opened in 1999.  The Technology Division offers a wide range technical programs including information technology, computer networking, digital media communication, computer aided design, electronic system technology, manufacturing technology and maintenance technology.  Specialty areas are also offered such as machine tool technology, welding, construction management, HVAC, industrial maintenance, computer science, web development, computer graphics, and computer maintenance and repair.

With the opening of the WDC Heartland has, for the first time, on-campus laboratories to allow students hands-on, real-world experiences in the areas of welding, machine tool technology, industrial automation, and communication systems.

The new building provides for expansion in existing programs.  For example, the Digital Media Program is doubling its lab space and constructing a new state-of-the-art video production studio, allowing students to produce and distribute web-based audio and video content.

Other expanding areas in information technology, such as the networking program include, voice over IP (VoIP), CISCO, data communication, wireless technology and other software based technologies.

“The new facility is a great resource for the community,” said Robert Shaw, Associate Dean of Technical Instruction.  “Students and employers are already seeing the benefits of this new building, and those benefits will increase as we continue to expand opportunities for technical education and training.”

In addition to our increased capacity for instruction, the building also is a prime example of state of the art green building design.  It was designed to be highly energy efficient and minimize waste both during construction and operation.

The first classes offered in the new Workforce Development Center started August 16, 2007.

Students can get more information from their advisor or visit the Technology Division offices on the first floor of the WDC in office suite 1200.
